I'm a soldier, i'm a soldier, i'm a soldier...
STEVEN GRANT ROGERS
- Name: STEVE ROGERS
- Alias: Cap
- Age: 96
- Gender: Male
- Species: Augmented Human
- Codename: Captain America
- Faction: Avengers, though he is currently acting on his own
- Play by (optional): Chris Evans
I'm a soldier, these shoulder's hold up so much
- Personality:
Steve is a man out of time, a relic of simpler times. In some ways he is a living artifact, property of the government that transformed him into what he is today. Much of who he is, however, is a testament to who he was even before he volunteered for the Super Soldier program so he could fight for his country. He is stubborn and strong willed, patriotic and to a certain extent he is naive and easily lead by those he views as his authority figure(s). He is driven by an equally strong sense of what he believes to be right and wrong. Steve possesses a personal drive that has instilled him with the desire to engage in hard work and discipline. When all else fails, he’ll use his physicality to work through problems or issues such as pounding a punching bag for hours on end.
He is an expert tactician and strategist, having earned those skills from the equivalent of several lifetimes of combat experience both real and simulated via training. He is trusting of authority; or rather he’d like to be. He wants to trust. He wants to hope. That in itself is perhaps his greatest strength as well as his greatest weakness as it directly translates into his old-fashioned state of mind that America is truly God's Country, the land of the free and just. Conversely, he doesn't quite understand the way politics works these days and 'politically correct' doesn't always jive with the belief system he was raised to follow. When decisions are made that go against this aged belief system he has a difficult time accepting those choices as valid or just.
Rogers is by all accounts and modern standards the proverbial boy scout. A throwback to a time not many alive can actually remember. The man known as Captain American could well be seen as a throwback, just part of the ever changing propaganda machine that is the modern political landscape. Virtually everyone he either knew or loved in his youth is long gone. He carries the weight of that loss with him daily, making every attempt to live in the here and now. It isn't always easy for him though he does make every attempt to buck up and be a man about it all. The moments in life where he can simply be are rare.
Not really the type to toss about quips or catch phrases, instead he is more the type to go in, get a job done and get out. If something he says or does come across as flippant or humorous it is generally unintentional. Strong and silent, he speaks when he needs to. And in his voice you can still here that same questioning young man, the same earnest demeanor, the same steadfast loyalty that earned him a spot in Erskine's trials for the serum. He's a quick study, able to pick up new information and new skills rather easily. The irony being that outside of work he can sometimes appear clueless to a point. Though this may be due to his own stubborn desire to hold on to the past - to what he knows - versus an inability to adapt.
As a human being, Steve is loyal, honorable, courageous and righteous. Though charisma isn't something he attains to with any conscious effort, there is something within him that is that intangible quality, something that speaks to others in an honest way that cannot be manufactured. Once he pegs you as a friend he will consider you one until the end unless you take actions to force him to question his choice. He is also very creative. This is something that not only aides him as a freelance artist but also helps him to think outside the box making him a skilled strategist.
Like many other great tacticians, Steve can see the myriad of possibility in any given situation on the battle field and determine the best outcome. He's not above sacrificing himself for the greater good. He's brave, often to a fault. He's a good guy; it’s what makes others want to follow him into the fire time and again, but he also holds some of that fire - that passion- within him. He's not above arguing his position or viewpoint when he feels justified in doing so. Nothing will infuriate him more than injustice or corruption, his views forged in a much more innocent and unforgiving time. - Likes: Freedom, Justice, Winning, Combat, Strength, Courage
- Dislikes: Tyrants, Threats to Liberty, The fact that he's alone, Killing without Cause, Lies, Weakness
- Appearance:
In the words of his creator, Scientist Emil Erskine, Steve is a "nearly perfect human being." He has blond hair, blue eyes and fills out his six foot two frame at two hundred and twenty pounds. Perpetually appearing to be in his twenties, even as he ages through the years, Steve's physique, face and youth are a testament to Erskine's genius. Steve considers himself a soldier first and foremost and he takes pride in that role. He actually enjoys this distinction, and that pride is manifested in regulation hair, regulation uniform, and behavior that he fells represents the United States in the best possible light. Off duty there is still something of the soldier within him, it’s a life he has embraced, the life he asked for.
Steve wears his blond hair close cropped and in a relatively old-fashioned way. While usually almost militaristic in its style, Rogers will sometimes go for weeks without a regular haircut if he is participating in a particularly rigorous mission as proof of his dedication though as soon as he is able he'll get a haircut. He just doesn't like it or anything in his life 'getting all wild and crazy.' If anything, it’s one of the few things in his life that he feels like he has some control over. His keen blue eyes reflect both creativity and intelligence, but worse they can appear almost fanatical to those who do not see eye to eye with him. They can also flash with self-righteous anger when faced with what he sees as less than what he views as the True American Way. When pleased, Steve flashes an easy grin and his general demeanor in uniform is one of seriousness and respect making him the perfect role model for his troops.
He embodies the definition of Golden Boy, outwardly handsome with classic matinee idol looks and an easy grin that makes him appear much more charming than he actually is. Granted, the man does possess charm, boyishness, and an almost fierce puppy dog sense of loyalty that can all be described as positive traits but these attributes have been twisted for the greater good - used to help market the man in the mask. More importantly, Steve is the living embodiment of what it once meant to be a boy scout and a great American. Over the years, society has changed and the irony of his existence is that he hasn't really adapted with it. He can come across as surprisingly stiff and formal despite his youthful countenance, which puts those who don't know him off. He carries himself with pride, confident that he is honorable and correct, only doing what is needed to promote American strength, justice and apple pie.
Before the procedure that transformed him into Weapon One by the Weapon Plus program, Steve was a scrawny art student with a strong desire to serve his country. Since that important and fateful night, Rogers' body has been pumped up with almost a hundred pounds of muscle. His body lacks all but the necessary body fat to keep his system at peak condition. Virtually every muscle in his body has been artificially enhanced in size and strength to make him the ideal super soldier. If he did not move with such easy grace and speed one might describe him as muscle bound and bulky, as it is however he is well proportioned and a joy to watch in action.
He has worn the uniform of Captain America for so long that it is hard to imagine him in anything else. His costume hides his identity, the bright blue cowl covering his face from the nose up. Tiny white eagle wings rise outward from his temples, a white A traditionally crowning his central forehead. The chest, upper back and shoulders of his ensemble are scaled, the scales a sort of armor. Vertical red and white stripes like those that appear on the flag itself rise up from his belted waist to end beneath his broad chest, a white star adorning its patriotic center. The lower portion of the uniform is a solid blue, red buccaneer styled boots and gloves completing the traditional look. - Distinguishing Features: Even though America has fallen he still holds tight to the ideals of the American Dream.
- Equipment: About the shield, it has great aerodynamic properties allowing it to slice through the air with minimal wind resistance and deflection of path. Its great overall resilience, combined with its natural concentric stiffness, enables it to rebound from objects with minimal loss of angular momentum. It is virtually indestructible as it is resistant to penetration, temperature extremes, and the entire electromagnetic spectrum of radiation. The only way it can be damaged in any way is by tampering with its molecular bonding.

- Powers:
Born as an ordinary and all but unremarkable human being, Steve Grant Rogers was given the chance to undergo a top secret experiment and has since been endowed with spectacular abilities. He is for all purposes the perfect living specimen of manhood; his system so enhanced and altered that he no longer ages. The very cells of his body have been mutated by the Super Soldier serum to behave in peak condition, meaning that he possesses near super human strength and stamina and he is able to bench press up to 1100 pounds. In addition, his body is able to heal much faster than normal. This is not a traditional healing factor but rather one example of how efficiently his body operates.
His body seems to flush or otherwise expel toxins at such a rate that he is all but immune to sickness, the effects of alcoholic beverages or even apparent signs of aging. He is able to run a mile in less than a minute, his body recovering fully almost as soon as he has completed the run. The formula enhances all of his metabolic functions and the efficiency of his vital organs. He is as intelligent, agile, strong, fast and durable as it is possible to be without being superhuman. The fact that all of his functions have been enhanced enables him to outperform many who are stronger or smarter or faster than he, largely because they lack his ability in another area. Additionally, Steve possesses an almost iron-willed determination to do what is right and just, this strength of character often sees him through many a battle that a lesser man might have lost. While this is not an actual power, it so enhances everything else about him that it often strikes fear into his enemies and former allies.
He is an expert at judo and American-style boxing, spending a great portion of each day conditioning and further training his body to maintain his perfect form. He is without question the greatest human combatant to have ever lived, his abilities surpassing even the most adept Olympians and professional athletes. Captain America's only weapon is his shield, a concave disk 2.5 feet in diameter, weighing 12 pounds. It is made of a unique Vibranium-steel alloy that has never been duplicated. in the past attempts at such resulted in the creation of Adamantium like that which coats Wolverine's bones. He does have compartments in his belt that allow for a variety of specialized tools that vary depending on the expected needs of the mission at hand. Finally, Steve is an expert gymnast.
About the shield, it has great aerodynamic properties allowing it to slice through the air with minimal wind resistance and deflection of path. - Weaknesses:
Beyond everything else about him, Steve is simply a man. And it is this humanity that not only offers many of his greatest strengths but also his greatest weaknesses. He is just as vulnerable to injury or death as any ordinary human. He can be shot, stabbed, poisoned and so forth. While his body handles toxins and illness in an advanced way, pump enough bullets into him and he's going down. He has to rely on his wits, his training and even heroes have an off day, so he must remain at the top of his game to survive in the world he now finds himself a part of.
He is a man set adrift, deprived of a life in his own time. The advances of technology are often seen as improvable to him. Whereas Tony Stark might see possibility to reach an outcome through science, Steve has a tendency to approach life and war from a more human perspective. Thusly, against foes that may possess a genius for technology or intellect he can be at a disadvantage. He knows he's outlived his natural life. He knows he shouldn't have logically survived being frozen. He's glad to be alive, but it is one of the reasons he pushes himself so much, that he is so driven. He's stubborn in that regard and he'll keep pushing, keep fighting when others realize it would be smarter to pull back and reassess the situation. His old-fashioned mind set causes certain things or comments to get lost in translation. He's working on it, but every day he is surprised. - Skills:
Steve is a master of several martial arts styles. American-style boxing and judo make up the basis for his initial training, but he also has knowledge of kung-fu, karate, street-fighting and jiu-jitsu. He may from time to time utilize flash grenades and even guns - often choosing to forgo lethal force. He is an expert in the use of his most notable weapon, his shield. He is without question a terrific leader, one to rival the best out there. He can drive a number of vehicles ranging from motorcycles to military vehicles ranging from tanks and fixed wing aircraft to muscle copters like the Blackhawk. He likes to unwind with a paint brush on canvas occasionally or by restoring classic cars, both skills he has grown adept at over time. As a trained Black Ops Soldier, Rogers does his best to keep abreast of the latest techniques in survival methodology, technology and weapons operation. - History:
Strictly human, Steve Grant Rogers was born on July 4, 1917 to Joseph and Sara Rogers. The family lived in San Diego California, Steve spending a good bit of his childhood watching the healthier children playing outdoors while he was forced to watch life pass him by. His father passed away when he was a young child, his mother when he was in his early teens. These events, as well as his own frailty left him feeling isolated and shy though he wanted nothing more than to feel like he was a part of something larger, part of a team. After watching newsreel footage of Nazi dealings in Europe, Steve answered the call to arms, outraged by the crimes against humanity he could only witness from afar. He traveled with a friend across country to enlist, seeking a position in the Army. His friend was accepted but Steve was denied due to his poor health.
Steve didn't want to take no as the only answer and poured his heart out to the recruiter. His plea of service was heard by General Chester Phillips of the U.S. Army. The young man was offered the chance to participate in a top secret project called Rebirth. Rogers accepted and was flown to Washington to undergo testing to make sure that he was suitable. There, inside a secret lab he was introduced to a Doctor Erskine, the inventor of the Super Soldier serum, and his partner Doctor Reinstein. He was subjected to a variety of physical and mental tests, finally accepted and given the secret serum by ingestion and injection. On the night of the transformation into what he is today, his body was bombarded with Vita-rays that mutated the very cells of his body giving him enhanced attributes across the board.
He underwent extensive training including hand to hand combat, gymnastics, military strategy and tactics. The idea was that he would become an American symbol of all that was right and good in the world. He was granted the designation Weapon One and codenamed Captain America. This new name came with a nifty blue costume and even niftier shield. Steve fought the good fight, taking out many mid-century villains. In reality he was a special operative enjoying a second lease on life, though one wrought with danger at every turn. During the final days of the war, he and his partner Bucky were traveling across the north Atlantic when the plane transporting them exploded. This apparently killed his partner Bucky and threw Rogers deep into the icy depths of the frozen arctic waters where he was basically flash frozen.
The super soldier serum kept his body intact, not allowing his blood to freeze. It was within this icy tomb that Cap remained until more than sixty years later when he was found by the Nick Fury. His body was frozen within a large block of ice perched upon an altar, ironically, being worshiped as if he were a God. His remains were taken by S.H.E.I.L.D. and Cap was thawed. He was subsequently revived, with many of the Avengers present, only to be discovered to the war hero of their childhoods. Steve proved himself to be a great combatant, an excellent leader and a supreme tactician, though he was a man haunted by shades of the past and what he'd lost.
Cap fought alongside the other Avengers, eventually becoming their leader and faced off against many new threats as well as several of his old nemesis, villains such as Baron Zemo, Kang the Conqueror, the Red Skull to name a few of significance. Following several adventures, Steve took a chance and admitted his love for Sharon Carter., She rejected his marriage proposal and as a result, Cap decided to retire to nurse his bruised ego. A call to arms wasn’t too long in coming and soon enough he was back in action to include an ongoing feud and temporary body switch via the Cosmic Cube with the Red Skull, a series of partners including Hulk’s friend Rick Jones and Falcon Sam Wilson with whom he’d face down threats from MODOK, the Skrull and Baron Zemo’s son Helmut. Discovery of the Secret Empire – a corrupt underground group of high-ranking US Officials – left him protecting the White House from a direct attack. He faced off against the Time Keepers alongside his fellow Avengers and with the help of Kree Captain Mar-Vell he secured a defeat against Thanos.
Left questioning the government now, he adopted a new caped identity calling himself the Nomad. He and Falcon faced off against Madame Hydra with Namor. Only the return of Red Skull caused Steve to once again adopt his famed identity and resume wearing the red, white and blue. In retaliation for another loss, Skull exposed Falcon’s criminal past and Steve chose to stand by his friend during the resulting trial. The two continued to fight crime, the mob and Steve’s war against injustice. This fight took him across the globe, the pain of losing Sharon finally faded and he began a new romance with Bernadette Rosenthal. Before the pair could settle down following Bernie’s proposal he and several others were transported to Battleworld where he faced off against former wartime comrade Logan(Wolverine) and Doctor Doom. Once Doom was defeated, Cap reformed his broken shield by sheer force of will using Battleworld’s unique reality. Real life dealt him another blow as Bernie announced that she was leaving New York and returning to law school, effectively ending their relationship in the process.
During Onslaught, Captain America seemingly died defeating him, along with several other heroes, but was instead reborn in a pocket dimension created by Franklin Richards. Life continued to grow more and more dangerous as the Avengers faced battles against sorcery, alien races and an ever growing and ongoing contingent of villainous enemies such as Zemo’s Thunderbolts. Life changed for everyone when Apocalypse began his assault. Steve just happened to be on the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier the day it came crashing down. He managed to survive after riding a broken portion of the deck into a nearby lake. He was injured but he healed, traveling by night and avoiding detection by using his Black Ops training. In time he began surgical strikes against some of Apocalypse's factories. In the beginning he worked with like minded individuals but after losing too many of them, he now prefers to work alone.
All in all, these series of events have left him less than optimistic and hopeful than he’d prefer. His gut reaction to all that is happening is much the same as it has always been - he's going to keep fighting until he can't anymore. He's a soldier, a warrior. He's lost too much to give up now, so he won't. So he does what he can and simply tries to focus on the present – on the things he can control. Currently, he has made his way to Muir Island and is planning to destroy or cripple the Sentinel plant there.

Germany, 1943.
Gunfire rang out across the cobblestone streets as bullets tore into blocks of stone, shattered glass and ripped through flesh - bullets that instantly left most men injured or dead. Good men, boys with families and loved ones left behind in America who would never speak to or see them again. A boot came crashing down in the rubble, ignoring the terrain and forging through the debris like its owner had ever day of this God forsaken war. This was meant to be the war to end all wars. It was what he was fighting for, freedom, justice, a chance for the American people to live out their lives in peace and safety. He would end this.
The Sentinel of Liberty ducked, his patriotic form twisting with the agility of a seasoned athlete as he dodged yet another bullet. I'll stop them. Him. And his cronies too, Cap thought, with renewed determination through gritted teeth as he watched yet another young soldier fall. Even if most of these brave soldiers were going to die today, he was going to do what he could to keep as many of them alive as possible on his way to the compound at the other end of what had once been a thriving town and was now war torn, destroyed. The ghost of what could have been sorrow flashed across his eyes as he rounded a corner, using the shield, the corner of the building to shield him. A new recruit, like he'd once been, joined him coming up behind him, "Sir, they're surrounding us? What do I do?"
Then came the all too surreal, popping sound of heavy artillery, a German 10.5 Howitzer firing in the distance. A man got used to the sound. It kept him alive, and Steve was fond of life. He himself had family to get back to, a girlfriend waiting for him. No boy, no man, ever forgot the sounds of war...Steve mused as he listened, utilizing a quick second or two to determine where it was coming from. The decision made, course decided, Steve grabbed the recruit by the collar and gave him a shove, yelling, "Move it! Stay low, stay out of my way."
The super soldier pushed the boy. He had no choice in this. It was that or be forced to live with watching the kid get blown to bits. Rogers kept running, moving, picking up speed and practically carrying the boy across the ruined landscape to what he could only hope would be a safer spot. Behind the pair the corner of the building ruptured upon the projectile's impact. Broken, crumbling stones, dust, the fractured end of what must have once been a table all came flying outward in an all too familiar, violent expression of destruction.
More gunfire rained down upon them. This time it came from due west.
He needed to find out what they were up against. This kid had obviously adopted him, so he was going to do his best to get him out of this dog fight alive. "You know how to use that gun, soldier?" Cap asked quietly, his tone without waver. "Yes...sir." "Then use it." Steve snapped as he shifted positions, moved just enough, the shield sliding down along his thick arm to his gloved hand. It was smoothly spun upon the tip of his hand, all too gracefully released to do its master's bidding.
Steve always imagined that it made a sound, the disc as it flew through the air. It was designed too well for that, his weapon. The weapon sliced through one of the support columns holding up the balcony three Nazi gunmen were using as a prime vantage point to pick the approaching Allied troops apart, one by one. The three enemies fell, their cries of agony falling to silence within a satisfying pile of rubble. The shield returned. And the disc was caught by the same sure hand.
"So...it's true?"
"What is that?" Steve asked. He wasn't actually much older than this boy when he'd first tried to enlist and had been turned down as unsuitable for combat. When he got the chance he was going to have that rejection letter, the 4-H notification, framed for above the desk in his library at home. Proof and a reminder of what a man could do, could become if he persevered.
"You are some super hero."
"I'm just a man." Steve replied with shielded eyes. He took a breath, almost a sigh, "Just here to do my job. Nothing more." Another resounding pop resonated. Their position had been compromised, probably because of the get up they'd asked him to wear, the old glory - red, white and blue. "Get down!" He took the kid by the scruff, forcing him down, over to their left. The shield came up, protective above the boy. This, as the second story of the building above them exploded sending down a shower of dust that in time would sting the eyes and hardened men's hearts.
"Thanks, Cap."
"Just doing my job, soldier." He accessed the situation; they couldn't stay here any longer. This little breather was over. He nodded with his chin, a strong line of determined jaw visible beneath the masked cowl that covered the top half of his face. "We need to move. Keep your head down. I'll make a hole."
Just another day in the office.
